Pull the Thread (Susie's Theme)

by The Orbweavers

Written in and out of Melbourne’s lockdowns, on the rhythm of daily walks in nylon tracksuit pants, with our greyhound companion Susie. Tracing a pattern of streets. Silent nights. Watching sewing and embroidery videos. Susie chews on the Venetian blind cord and unravels the weave of a blanket. Stuart buys a small handloom. On the hard days, I call out to Susie: “Jump up!”. She bounds down the hallway and leaps onto the bed, a towering joyous wave. Drops and curls into a circle. Makes us smile.

Pull the thread, it cuts my skin -
Pull the thread, let more space in -
Pull the thread, I want to unravel.

Pull the thread, wind it up and save it,
Stitch it back into a future blanket,
Cut the blanket into smaller pieces.

Quilt it up into another sky,
Lie beneath it when I cannot cry,
Fold it up into a weighted sigh -
Jump up!
Hound of Love.

Pull the thread, screen is a magnet,
Need to focus on a tactile language,
If I could sew, I’d make you a coat.
I can mend but I cannot mould.
I walk permitted hours -
The body is a place itself.
Try to find another way of being -
Try to find another way.

Threading up the loom of streets,
Step one, two, warp and wefting,
Listen while the chance is here -
Still nights like I’ve never known.
Static charge, your nylon slacks,
A touch and something startles.
Longer time, the body knows,
How can I let old hurt go?

Jump up!
Hound of Love.
