The Other Side

from Loom by The Orbweavers

/

about

This is about ponds and death. It was written in May, as the grapevine outside our window was turning red, just after a family friend, who was a gardener, died. Her garden was filled with terracotta pots turned into ponds of goldfish and waterlilies, Japanese bamboo and banana palms. I was thinking about the role of insects and plants in breaking down organic matter and bodies... the transferral of chemical elements from one living entity to another.

The recording features a dark ride cymbal shimmering through the whole track. This was the last thing we added to the recording, while we were mixing it.

lyrics

Rust red, at the start of May,
Sun turns your sap away.
Soft wood,
Shedding spine -
You take me
To the other side.

This is the first month I ever knew,
No spring child,
Just a season twice removed.
Millipedes, and fallen fruit,
Snails reach:
Silver tracks afoot.
Silver tracks a foot.
The pond is dim, but it is yawning wide;
You’ll take me
To the other side.

Make a boat from that husk of bark,
All along the bank,
Here - you see the mark,
There - you see the mark.
Moths are here (and their allies);
You’ll take me
To the other side.
